Tooth Extractions
Regrettably, there are times when it becomes necessary to remove a tooth. We know it may not be your first option, and it certainly isn’t one we take lightly, but sometimes it is the only and best alternative.
An extraction might be as minor as assisting a baby tooth out of a child’s mouth that has misshapen or long roots that prevent it from falling out as it should. In this case the tooth must be removed to make way for the permanent tooth to erupt. Other times, a tooth may have so much decay it cannot be safely restored, so your doctor may recommend removal and replacement with a bridge or implant. Whether infection, orthodontic correction, or problems with a wisdom teeth, each circumstance which calls for tooth removal is different. Drs. Razdolsky and Tincher will always have your best interest in mind. They evaluate all your case information to help you determine the right treatment plan for you.
If and when it is determined that a tooth needs to be removed, you will schedule a subsequent visit for the actual procedure. During the procedure we can even offer different forms of sedation to help put you at ease. Lake Forest Dental Associates currently offers, local anesthetic, laughing gas and oral sedation. If you are interested in any of these please let your doctor know and they will be happy to assist you.
The root of each tooth is encased within your jawbone in a “tooth socket,” and your tooth is held in that socket by a ligament. To extract a tooth, your dentist must expand the socket and separate the tooth from the ligament holding it in place. While this procedure is typically very quick, sometimes you may hear clicking and popping noises.
Once a tooth has been removed, neighboring teeth may shift, causing problems with chewing or with your jaw joint function. To avoid these complications, your dentist may recommend that you replace the extracted tooth. There are various options to replace a missing tooth, such as an implant, bridge, and partial or full denture.
